Mas Alta
Each and every bottle produced by Bodegas Mas Alta is a love letter to Priorat.
In the late nineties, a Belgian couple visited Priorat and felt the call of the wild. They were so taken by the rugged beauty of the region, that Michel and Christine Vanhoutle decided to create a winery almost on the spot. Thus, in 1999, and with the aid of some friends, they bought an old estate called Mas Romaní, which was to be the origin of Bodega Mas Alta.
Located in La Vilella Alta, at the very heart of the Priorat, the Mas Alta winery was advised from its inception by the prestigious Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie (winemakers in Côtes du Rhône). Following their advice, the owners bought 35 hectares of Grenache and Carignan vineyards grown in the slate soils typical of the region. To complement the local varieties, they planted some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Moreover, they also began collaborating with local peasants in order to make the most of their precious old grapevines, some of which are over 100 years of age.
Besides its spectacular red wines, Bodegas Mas Alta winery is gaining recognition for crafting some of the finest examples of white wines in Priorat
