The origins of Bodegas Otxaran date from the XVIIIth century, when the Laiseka family began making cider and txakolí alongside the Virgen de Lorea chapel. The winery is located in the heart of the Otxaran valley, in the province of Bizkaia, Basque Country. The company is currently owned by businessman Kosme Bibanko, a descendant of the Laiseka family.
With 21 hectares under vine spread across rolling hills, the estate of Bodegas Otxaran-Virgen de Lorea is the largest dedicated to the production of Txakolí wine in the Basque Country. The area has a neatly Atlantic climate, with abundant rainfall and persistent morning mists acting as a cooling agent. The winery grows four grape varieties: Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia - the signature grape - Hondarrabi Zuri, Hondarrabi Beltza and Sauvignon Blanc.
The wines of Bodegas Otxaran-Virgen de Lorea are typically vinified in stainless steel tanks. The product portfolio is mainly comprised of white wines like Aretxaga Txakolí, a young Txakolí briefly aged on lees. The catalogue also includes the wine Lore Rosé, a characterful rosé wine made solely from Hondarrabi Beltza.
