Pittacum

Pittacum

A producer of characterful Mencía wines in El Bierzo.

A branch of Grupo Terras Gauda since 2002, Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum had been founded only three years before with the aim of producing high-quality red wines from Mencía, the region's flagship variety.

Located in Arganza, a remarkably beautiful area northwest of the city of León, the estate vineyards of Pittacum winery cover an area of 5 hectares, mostly planted with old Mencía vines -there is also some Godello. The winery sources the rest of its grapes from trustworthy local winegrowers.

The vines, 50 to 110 years of age, grow in poor soils and have very low yields. The climate combines the dry element characteristic of Castile, south of Bierzo, with the Atlantic influence from Galicia, to the north. Average yearly temperature is 12.3ºC, and average annual precipitation is 721 mm.

The wines of Pittacum winery convey different expressions of the Mencía from Bierzo. The wine catalogue is comprised of several red wines and one white wine. They are among El Bierzo's most interesting-and reasonably priced wines.
