Terras Gauda

The wines produced by Bodegas Terras Gauda in Rías Baixas combine an innovative approach with a traditional character.

Located in Pontevedra, in an area belonging to the DO Rías Baixas not far from the Portuguese border, Bodegas Terras Gauda was the first brand established by Grupo Terras Gauda, soon followed by Bodegas y Viñedos Pittacum in Bierzo, and Quinta Sardonia in Ribera del Duero.

This Galician winery was born in 1990, and it produced 37,000 bottles in its first released vintage. At first Terras Gauda winery made wines only from peasant-owned vineyards; however, in order to ensure supply the company immediately began planting new vineyards with indigenous varieties from Rías Baixas. The most important one is, of course, Albariño, but there are also some lesser-known, though hugely interesting varieties, such as Loureira and Caíño Blanco.

Nowadays, Terras Gauda winery produces up to 1.5 milions of bottles, which are sold in more than 50 countries. The company owns 160 hectares of grapevines near the mouth of the Miño river, in an area called Valle de O'Rosal, planted in slate soils located at an altitude between 50 and 150 metres. They grow under a benign climate, with abundant rainfall, mild temperatures and rare frosts.

The team of Bodegas Terras Gauda takes great care of the vineyards, using non-invasive treatments and carefully handpicking the grapes. Each variety is separately vinified with indigenous yeasts through a process which combines the best of two worlds: on the one hand, the precise craftmanship made possible by the latest winemaking technology; on the other, the respectful approach which characterizes the traditional local methods to wine production.

Thanks to its wise combination of old and new, Terras Gauda winery was the first winery in Galicia to receive a ISO 9001 Certification in Quality Management. Besides that, the wines and spirits produced Terras Gauda have received many national and international awards.
