Details

It is fair to say that 4 Kilos Vinícola, the producer of this Spanish red wine, is the most interesting wine company currently operating in beautiful Mallorca.

Totally confident about the quality of the indigenous grapes of the island, Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, co-owners of the winery, again crafted the 2021 vintage of 4 kilos solely from Callet, Mallorca's noblest native red variety.

The grapes come from three parcels planted with 20 to 50-year-old vines. Cooled by the sea breeze, the vineyards have soils which are very rich in ferric oxide, a feature that gives the earth an idiosyncratic reddish colour and imparts a distinctive savouriness to this Crianza red wine.

Harvested by hand, carefully selected and destemmed, 50% of the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and the other 50% in 2,500-litre wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and 600-litre oak barrels. After that, 4 kilos 2021 was blended and aged for 12 months in 600-litre Allier French oak barrels.

To enjoy it at its fullest, this age-worthy red wine from Mallorca should be decanted 1 hour before drinking.

Incidentally, the packaging of this organic red wine is as exquisite as its content.

Appearance

The red wine 4 Kilos is medium ruby with a purple rim.

Nose

This varietal Callet has a strikingly pure and remarkably complex nose, with exquisite aromas of forest berries, pomegranate, Mediterranean herbs and dry earth, and suggestions of liquorice, carob and spices.

Palate

This wine of Bodega 4 Kilos Vinícola is smooth, layered and richly textured. Cherries and redcurrants, with some earthy and mineral notes and a salty bite. Stupendous acidity, with powdery tannins and a long, ever-evolving finish.

Our personal opinion

The excellent 4 Kilos 2021 shows again that the island of Mallorca has everything needed to become a Mediterranean Burgundy: terroir, climate and grapes.

The 2016 is the best vintage so far, no question about it. I think this defines a paradigm of what Majorcan wines should be. Deeply Mediterranean, and also supremely elegant.

A refined wine with a character very much of its own. I'm glad that Majorcan wines are starting to develop a definite identity.

Absolutely lovely wine, it keeps getting better with each vintage. The winemakers have really fine-tuned it and now it is the best wine from Mallorca. No question about it.

The best wine from Mallorca? This Callet grape has a very original profile, fresh, linear and nicely textured. This wine reminds me of some great Italian reds.
