Details

A prime example of DOCa Rioja's noblest classicism, the Viñedos del Contino winery crafts Contino Gran Reserva from its very best vineyards, all of which are located in Rioja Alavesa.

The main component of this Spanish red wine is Tempranillo, complemented with Graciano, Mazuela (Carignan) and Grenache, all coming from vines planted around the village of Laguardia.

The grapes were selected both on site and in the cellar. After being destemmed, they were fermented and macerated for 15-20 days in stainless steel tanks, where this Gran Reserva red wine also completed malolactic fermentation.

After that, Contino Gran Reserva 2017 was transferred into used American (30%) and French (70%) oak barrels and aged for 24 months, after which the wine was bottled and aged for a minimum of 24 months before hitting the market.

Properly stored, this Rioja red wine should evolve nicely in the bottle.

We suggest that you decant this Gran Reserva from La Rioja at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Contino Gran Reserva is pale purple with a garnet rim.

Nose

Complex and multilayered, this blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuela and Grenache first suggests blackcurrants, raspberries and Middle Eastern spices, with hints of vanilla, cocoa and Havanna cigars.

Palate

This wine from Viñedos del Contino is full of succulent ripe fruit, which at first gives a warm impression, soon dispelled by the excellent acidity and the well-integrated tannins. The toasted and smokey notes take the lead, and there is also a creamy touch which is pleasant but not oversweet. Long finish with a spicy and fruity aftertaste.

Our personal opinion

An arresting old-school wine, Contino Gran Reserva 2017 is the perfect combination of elegance, complexity and traditional Rioja character.

Mixed Thoughts...
Value
When I tasted this 2017 G.R. Rioja last week, it left me with mixed thoughts. It didn't give me the 'wauw' great feeling effect. It is a good Rioja though with a pleasant taste, but to 'elegant' (thin) for me. I just prefer wines with more body. If I had to rate this wine I would give it 90 points.

First Beronia, and now Contino. Two mighty Gran Reservas which I would drink at any time.
