Details

A branch of Gil Family Estates, Bodegas Atalaya is the producer of La Atalaya del Camino.

Made from 85% Garnacha Tintorera (a.k.a Alicante Bouschet) and 15% Monastrell (a.k.a Mourvèdre), this blended Spanish red wine features two bold grapes that produce wines with a great acidity, impressive structure and substantial ageing potential.

This interesting red wine from Almansa comes from low-yielding vines with an average age of 45 years located at an altitude between 700 and 1000 metres above sea level. Soils are composed of sand and limestone. Climate is rigorously Continental.

The grapes were carefully selected and separately vinified. After that, La Atalaya del Camino 2021 from DO Almansa was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Decant this Crianza red wine at least 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine La Atalaya del Camino is deep purple with some violet tinges.

Nose

A blend of old-vines Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell with a deep character, it exhibits suggestive aromas of juicy black fruit and red fruit, alongside creamy notions of spices, vanilla, toffee and moka over a fresh, balsamic background.

Palate

Powerful, meaty and lush, this wine of Bodegas Atalaya combines the intense notes of black fruit with remembrances of menthol, dry earth, violets, chocolate withered herbs and spices. This vegan red wine has a lively acidity, ripe tannins and a very long finish.

Our personal opinion

A fabulous value, La Atalaya del Camino 2021 is complex, savoury and age-worthy.

Juan Gil nails it every time. This wine does not try to be a Frenchy, pretentious, soul-deprived, supposedly elegant beverage. It is intense, earthy and bears its Spanish character with pride.
