Details

Produced by the Roqueta family, the red wine LaFou de Batea is the flagship bottling of the LaFou Celler winery.

A single vineyard Spanish red wine, the grapes are sourced from 50 to 70-year-old vines located in DO Terra Alta. The 2018 vintage is made from a blend of Grenache and Hairy Grenache with a 15% Samsó (aka Carignan).

Harvested by hand and selected on site and on arriving at the cellar, the grapes were destemmed, fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks. Then this Crianza red wine was transferred into 300-litre Central European oak barrels and egg-shaped concrete tanks, where it was aged for 12 months.

After that, the red wine LaFou de Batea 2018 was blended and bottled with no fining or filtration. Finally, the wine was aged for a minimum of 12 months in the bottle before its release.

Decant this red wine from Terra Alta at least 1 hour before drinking.

Pair with hearty meat recipes.

Appearance

The red wine LaFou de Batea is deep ruby with a purplish rim.

Nose

This blend of Grenache, Hairy Grenache and Carignan is intense, deep and certainly terroir-bound. The purest red fruit, slowly evolving into blackberries and brambles, with intriguing nuances of black olives, dried tomates, lavender, and Mediterranean garrigue. The ageing notes are subdued and remain in the background, in the form of subtle spicy and toasted hints.

Palate

This wine from LaFou Celler is bold and substantial, with an initial warmth soon taken over by a fresh, enlivening acidity and an entrancing minerality. Ripe, chiseled tannins and very long finish with some balsamic and mineral remembrances.

Our personal opinion

Impressive efforts like the red wine LaFou de Batea 2018 demonstrate that Terra Alta is a region worthy of the attention of any serious wine aficionado.

Amazing wine
Value
Impressively mineral and streamlined. Nevertheless, it is not yet fully formed. Great potential.
