Produced in DO YeclaSolanera is the result of the collaboration between Bodegas Castaño and the renowned American importer Eric Solomon, a great connoisseur of Spanish wine.

This excellent Spanish red wine is a blend made from 70% old-vines Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) grapes, along with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Garnacha Tintorera (known as Alicante Bouschet outside of Spain), both coming from 20-year-old vines.

The vineyards are located in an area with a harsh, extremely demanding continental climate, with long, cold winters and hot summers with long drought periods.

Harvested by hand in October, after a careful selection the grapes were macerated and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Then, Solanera 2019 was aged in 80% French oak barrels and 20% American oak barrels for 10 months. This red wine from Yecla was not stabilized prior to its bottling.

This is a nuanced Crianza red wine, whose qualities will be greatly enhanced if we decant it 30 minutes before serving.

Appearance

The red wine Solanera is medium purple with violet tinges.

Nose

Mulberries, cranberries and redcurrants, with intringuing hints of wet earth and graphite. This blend of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tintorera slowly evolves into notions of moka, cocoa and liquorice over a balsamic background.

Palate

Medium-bodied, savoury and very fresh, with some vegetal notes, wild berries, hints of red and white flowers, remembrances of moka and toffe, and a touch of tobacco. Mild acidity and sweet, ripe tannins. This wine of Bodegas Castaño has a medium-long, gently mineral finish .

Our personal opinion

An astounding value, Solanera 2019 is an unexpectedly subtle Mediterranean red.

Another very good, unassuming wine from Murcia.

That's what you are
Value
Try this wine and you won't regret it. Full-bodied and smooth-tasting, neither oaky nor overcooked, it is one of the best values I've ever encountered.
