Bodega Pintia

The project of Bodegas Vega Sicilia in DO Toro.
In 1995, the Álvarez Family, owners of Bodegas Vega Sicilia, had the idea of creating a branch in the DO Toro. Back then, Toro was a virtually unknown wine region, though auspiciously linked with the mother company by the legendary Duero river. In 1997, David Alvárez and his son Pablo started buying some old vines and planting some new ones. In parallel, they started the construction of the facilities of Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia and began testing the winemaking potential of several clones of Tinta de Toro, the region's flagship variety. Reassured by the results, in 2001 they made the first vintage of Pintia wine.
Nowadays, Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia winery has 96 hectares of vines with an average age of 35 years, planted at roughly 700 metres above sea level. The area has an extreme Continental climate, with bitterly cold winters and excruciatingly hot summers. Average yearly rainfall is 350-400 mm. The estate vineyards are divided into two main parcels: Garabitas, with deep gravel soils, and Los Hoyos, with a rocky topsoil.
The first commercial vintage of Pintia wine was released in 2004. Since that moment, the wines of Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia winery have enjoyed a high critical acclaim. In fact, it would be fair to say that the winery has played a key role in increasing the prestige of the Designation of origin Toro, a region that, though not as well known as it should be, nevertheless enjoys a firmly established reputation in the wine world nowadays.
