Castell d'Encús

The personal project of world-class winemaker Raul Bobet on the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees.
After travelling the world looking for a place where the effect of climate change on viticulture could be
minimized, the prestigious Catalan winemaker Raül Bobet, founder and manager of bodega Castell
d'Encús, decided to settle in the village of Talarn, on the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees, an area in the
province of Lleida within the boundaries of DO Costers del Segre.
The Castell d'Encús estate covers an area of 120 hectares, only 23 of which are planted with vineyards.
There, Mr. Bobet – who, besides having a master's degree from UC Davis, holds a degree in chemical
engineering - cultivates a rich array of varieties, mostly international one: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Sémillon, White Grenache and
Albariño. They are planted at altitudes between 850 up to 1230 metres above sea level, in poor soils
typically composed of chalk. This fact, together with the harsh Continental climate and the high
temperature differences between daytime and nighttime, allow the vines to ripe slowly and steadily while
developing a high amount of polyphenolic compounds, two facts which produce grapes of a truly
exceptional quality.
Harvested by hand in little boxes, subsequent vinification takes place in different types of containers, from
stainless steel tanks to open-air stone vats which, amazingly, date back from the 12th century. They were
dug by the Knights of Malta, a monastic order who populated the area at that time.
The wide product portfolio of Bodega Castell d'Encús is comprised of still red wines, such as Quest, still
white wines, like Taleia, and a refined sparkling wine, Taïka.
These are highly sophisticated, almost cerebral wines.
