Costers del Sió

Bodega Costers del Sió was founded in 1992, after the Porcioles-Buixó family acquired Finca Flix, an
impressive 700-hectare estate with vineyards, olive trees, cereal fields and even a hunting ground that,
several centuries ago, had belonged to the Counts of Urgell, one of Catalonia's oldest noble families. The
winery is located near the village of Balaguer, in the western Catalan province of Lleida, DO Costers del
Segre.

Planted since 1998 onwards, the vineyards of bodega Costers del Sió cover a surface area of 80 hectares
at 310 metres of altitude. Climate is Mediterranean with a Continental influence, and the soils have low
levels of organic matter and a loam-sandy composition. Vineyard management follows the guidelines of
organic farming.

As regards varieties, the local red grapes Tempranillo and Grenache share the land with international
cultivars like Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Despite the latter
varieties being predominant, it is worth mentioning that the Costers del Sió winery has taken an active
part in a program aiming to recover the Trobat grape, an ancestral red variety from Costers del Segre
that has shown remarkable promise after several experimental vinifications, and could become the
signature grape of a region lacking in local character thus far.

Made in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest winemaking technology, the wines of Costers
del Sió are typically vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged in oak barrels. The winery is also exploring
non-conventional techniques in wines like Finca Siós, fermented in open-air stone vats from the XIIth
century.

The Costers del Sió brand has five branches. The main one is Bodega Siós, whose portfolio comprises
young wines like Petit Siós, wines with no added sulfites like Siós Nature, Crianzas like Alto Siós and
refined Siós sparkling wines made from international varieties. The other labels are Petit Comité, La
Boscana, Las Cuadras and Celistia.
