Cunqueiro

Winemakers in Ribeiro for more than a century.
The origins of Bodegas Cunqueiro go back to the 1920s, when Galician vintner Severino Fernández,
nicknamed 'O Cunqueiro', started selling his wines to local taverns. In the 1960s, as a result of the rural
exodus, Severino's wines, which already had a reputation for quality, became known in Galicia's main
cities: A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.
In the 1980s, Cesáreo and Benigno Fernández, Severino's sons, took charge of the project and began
selling the Cunqueiro wines in the Spanish and international markets. To meet the growing demand, they
expanded and uprgraded the winemaking facilities. Nowadays, the Cunqueiro winery is run by the third
generation of the Fernández family.
Located in the village of Prado de Miño, province of Ourense, DO Ribeiro, the vineyards of Bodega
Cunqueiro occupy a surface area around 10 hectares, which are planted solely with local varieties. The
white grapes are Treixadura, Torrontés, Albariño and Loureira; the red grapes are Mencía, Sousón,
Brancellao, Caíño and Ferrol.
As it is common in the region of Galicia, the estate vineyards are divided into many small parcels.
Situated at 125 to 400 metres above sea level, the different microclimates existing in the area have a
common feature: during the summer season, temperatures are extremely high, something rather unusual in an Atlantic area like Galicia, but one that allows the winery to harvest perfectly ripen grapes. The vines,
45 years old on average, grow in very poor, high-acidic soils made of sand, clay, slate and schist.
Made by oenologist Óscar Fernández, the wines of Bodegas Cunqueiro wisely combine the local tradition with a modern approach to winemaking. The portfolio is mainly comprised of white wines, a noteworthy example of which is Máis de Cunqueiro, the only varietal Torrontés from the DO Ribeiro. The winery also makes a couple of reds from native Galician varieties and several types of Orujo, the local version of Grappa.
