Marqués de Velilla

Marqués de Velilla

Soulful wines from Ribera del Duero.

Bodega Marqués de Velilla was founded in 1985 by the Hernández de Mercado family. During its first decade, the winery was located in the village of Roa. Since 1996, its headquarters are situated in the village of La Horra, Burgos, in the so-called "Golden Triangle" of the DO Ribera del Duero, the area between Roa, La Horra and Anguix.

Covering a surface area of 150 hectares at 800 to 900 metres above sea level, the vineyards of bodega Marqués de Velilla are enclosed within the main estate, Monte Villalobón, one of the finest spots for grape cultivation in La Horra. After a thorough study of the soils, a team of experts identified 18 different terroirs, made of variable amounts of clay, gravel, sand and limestone. The vines were planted in the early 1990s in nine plots, each with distinctive characteristics: Carraroa, La Vega del Conde, La Maria, Curillas, El Frescal, El Membrillo, Pozuelos, La Picona and El Charcón.

The main variety is Tinta del País (or Tempranillo), the signature grape of Ribera del Duero, which occupies roughly 90% of the vineyard surface area. The rest is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Vineyard management follows environmentally sustainable and organic farming criteria.

The product portfolio of the Marqués de Velilla winery comprises mostly red wines, like the wine Marqués de Velilla Roble and the wine Marqués de Velilla Crianza, two nice examples of the traditional Ribera del Duero style. The image on the labels is the silhouette of Doncel de Mataperras, a centenary stone pine located in the midst of the vineyard that has become the emblem of the company.
