Ferrer Bobet

Bodega Ferrer Bobet was founded in 2002 by two important figures of the Spanish wine trade: pharmaceutical tycoon and longtime wine aficionado Sergi Ferrer-Salat, founder of the legendary and sadly missed Monvínic Bar in Barcelona, and famed oenologist Raul Bobet, the former technical director of Bodegas Torres, known for his work at the helm of bodega Castell d’Encús, his personal project on the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees.

Located on the vicinity of Porrera, a village situated in one of the freshest areas of DOQ Priorat, the estate of bodega Ferrer Bobet covers an area of 70 hectares, 15 of which are under vine. Composed of the rugged slate (llicorella) soils that have given worldwide fame to the region, the vineyards are planted on steep slopes that receive the influence of the south-est wind and the Mediterranean breeze. These factors, together with the huge temperature differences between daytime and nighttime that occur in the area, are key in preserving optimal levels of natural acidity and allowing the grapes to ripen steadily and completely.

A proud advocate of local varieties, Ferrer Bobet winery mainly cultivates old vineyards of Grenache and Carignan, the flagship red varieties of the Priorat region. In parallel, the winery grows the international varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Roussane, which were planted in 2005. Vineyard management follows the guidelines of organic agriculture, using no pesticides or herbicides for enhancing biodiversity and preserving the environment.

The wines of the Ferrer Bobet winery are vinified in a stunning winemaking facility – whose shape suggests a ship stranded amidst the vines – a nice example of biophilic design equipped with state-of-the- art oenological technology. The wines are fermented in oak vats and stainless steel tanks, and subsequently aged in fine-grain, lightly-toasted French oak barrels. First released in 2008, the two wines that best showcase the house style are Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles, a blend of the two local varieties, and Ferrer Bobet Selecció Especial, a stunning varietal Carignan from centenary vines. As of today, this winery from Priorat enjoys a well-deserved reputation among senior wine critics and serious wine aficionados across the world. Yearly production is around 50,000 bottles.
