The vermouth Carpano Formula Antica is, at least in the modern sense of the term, the world's very first vermouth.
Created in the city Torino, this Italian vermouth was developed by the herbalist Antonio Benedetto Carpano, who after many tries finally found the perfect formula to craft a wine macerted with herbs. Soon afterwards, Mr. Carpano sent a bottle of his creation to the Royal Palace of King Victor Amadeus III, located just across the street from his herbs shop. The king liked the new infused wine so much that, from then on, it became a pantry staple at the Royal Palace. The rest, as they say, is history.
This vermouth from Piedmont is made from a blend of white wines coming from the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna, Puglia and Sicily. After that, this 1-litre bottle vermouth was infused with a selection of thirty spices and aromatic plants, such as Tahitian vanilla, Iranian saffron and wormwood from the Piedmontese Alps.
Pale brown with some amber reflections, the nose of the vermouth Carpano Formula Antica is evocative and refined, showcasing raisins, dates, candied citrus fruit, dry fruit, clove and cinnamon. On the palate, vermouth Carpano is well-rounded and elegant, with a gently sweet entrance, an elegantly bitter and balsamic mid palate and a long ending reminiscent of spices, saffron and cococa.
The exquisite packaging is also worth mentioning: a blown glass traditional bottle with a charming vintage label.
