Two features set Es Monestir apart from most other wines.

First, this Spanish red wine is produced solely from over 40-year-old, ungrafted Monastrell vineyards. Second, it comes from the tiny island of Formentera, arguably the most charming of all the Balearic islands.

Constantly exposed to the sea wind, which acts as a natural sanitizing agent, the flatland vineyards have limestone soils and get a lot of sun. As a result, the vines grow strong and thrive.

Hand-harvested in early September, the grapes were selected and refrigerated for 18 hours. Then they were destemmed, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. After completing a post-fermentation maceration, Es Monestir 2018 was transferred into French oak barrels and aged for 12 months. Finally, this organic red wine from Formentera was bottled and aged for a further 2 years before being released onto the market.

Pair with cured cheeses, meat recipes, or a Mediterranean Bouillabaisse.

Only 875 bottles of this one-of-a-kind Crianza red wine were produced. Get one while you can!

Appearance

The red wine Es Monestir is medium purple with a ruby rim.

Nose

Quite distinctive, this varietal Monastrell conveys aromas of tree bark, dry earth, garrigue and violets, alongside subtle notes of spices, bilberries and blackcurrants.

Palate

Deep and terroir-bound, this wine from Bodega Terramoll succeeds in communicating a real sense of place. The wine has an unmistakably Mediterranean flair, with a superb acidity, some lively tannins and an earthy and mineral character. Long finish with a note of spices and flowers.

Our personal opinion

A paragon of what is sometimes defined as "elegant rusticity", Es Monestir 2018 is a lovely wine.
