Red Wine Gran Caus Negre 2017
Availability: In stock
One of the best Bordeaux blends produced in Spain, Gran Caus Negre is made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from vines over 30 years of age.
It is produced by the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery from estate-owned vineyards located in the Garraf mountain range, a distinctive subzone of DO Penedès defined by its proximity to the sea and its calcareous soils with an abundance of marine fossils.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were traditionally vinified with indigenous yeasts. This Spanish red wine went through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, and then it was aged for 12 months.
After that, Gran Caus Negre 2017 was aged for no less than 6 years in the bottle (!) before its commercial release.
Thus the winery guarantees its customers following which this organic red wine is only released when it is ready for consumption. A most uncommon thing, considering the frantic pace of today's wine business.
In order to fully enjoy it, it is advisable to decant this red wine from Penedès 3 hours before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine Gran Caus Negre is deep ruby with a brick red rim. |

Nose | Remarkably elegant, with an understated aromatic complexity. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot carries pure aromas of wild berries and sour cherries, with dim mineral notions, remembrances of Mediterranean underbrush, and hints of Havanna cigars, moka, Jamaican pepper, balsam and cocoa. |
Palate | Poised and fresh, this red wine of the Can Ràfols dels Caus winery has a superb acidity, an exceptional balance and nicely rounded tannins. Black fruit, citrus, aromatic herbs, spices and a mineral and earthy background. Very articulate and detailed, with a long, mineral finish. |
Our personal opinion | The Bordeaux blend Gran Caus Negre 2017 really needs some time to unfurl. When it does, though, the wine is nothing short of stupendous. |
