Details

The Menade winery has just released the new vintage of La Misión de Menade - which, again, raises the bar for Verdejo wines.

This varietal Spanish white wine is made from centenary vineyards with exceptional characteristics. The berries they produce are smaller and have a thicker skin than the traditional Verdejo grapes. Thus, besides having a naturally higher concentration of phenolic compounds, they are more resistant to grape diseases such as botrytis.

Composed of sandy soils, the vineyards are farmed following the guidelines of organic agriculture.

After a meticulous harvest, the grapes were crushed with whole bunches. Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts beganin stainless steel tanks, and was completed in oak vats, oak barrels and clay amphorae -interestingly, the clay is made from the same soil in which the vines are planted.

Once the process was completed, La Misión de Menade 2021 was aged for a period of 10 months.

Finally, this organic white wine from VT Castilla y León was aged for a minimum of 2 years before hitting the market.

This is a complex, profound Crianza white wine which goes well beyond the cliché of trivial, quaffable Verdejo.

Decant 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

Clean and bright, La Misión de Menade is medium yellow with some golden tinges.

Nose

Beginning with some mineral and earthy nuances, this Verdejo suggests some aromas of ripe yellow fruit, intense remembrances of bitter herbs and aromatic herbs, and some smokey and spicy remembrances.

Palate

This white wine from Bodega Menade is deep, textured and intense. Structure is rock-solid, and acidity is phenomenal. Very personal and well-defined, with a characteristic, elegant bitterness which is Verdejo's trademark. Long finish with deep mineral notes and hints of flowers, fennel, herbs and white fruit.

Our personal opinion

The white wine La Misión de Menade 2021 shows the true potential of the Verdejo variety.

Impressive Verdejo, really deep. A combination of earthy, herbal and citrusy notes with a very tight acidity.

5 stars Verdejo

I like Verdejo wines more and more every day. After having drunk many creamy, overtly sweet Chardonnays, I appreciate the bitter touch and the freshness of this grape. This is a serious wine. It ceaslessly evolved for more than 2 hours. 5 stars!!
