A varietal Syrah from DO Méntrida, Malpaso is produced by Bodegas Canopy

It is crafted from vines around 30 years of age, grown in sandy soils at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. The vineyards are in the famed wine region of Sierra de Gredos.

Harvested by hand and carefully selected, once in the cellar the grapes were cold-soaked prior to alcoholic fermentation. Then this Spanish red wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks. After that, it was transferred into 50% new and 50% 2nd year 500-litre French oak barrels.

Finally, Malpaso 2019 completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 12 months in the barrels.

This Crianza red wine was not filtered or clarified before bottling.

Pair this red wine from Méntrida with meat recipes.

Appearance

The wine Malpaso is medium ruby with a bluish rim.

Nose

This lively Syrah red wine shows a transparently varietal character. Black fruit, aromatic herbs, clove, pepper, a dash of chocolate, black olives, wet earth and some mineral remembrances.

Palate

Fresh, gentle and well-structured, this wine from Bodegas Canopy has some ripe tannins and a good acidity. Ripe mulberries, laurel, some smokey nuances, black pepper and undergrowth. Long, delicately sweet finish.

Our personal opinion

Succulent and nuanced, Malpaso 2019 is an utterly enjoyable red wine from Sierra de Gredos.

Cool climate Syrah. Delicious, and incredibly priced.

Is this the best Syrah produced in Spain? I honestly think so, at least to my knowledge. The altitude gives the wine a supple character and a great freshness, and the varietal character is very present.
