Details

Produced by Bodegas Torres, the wine Milmanda is one of the few Spanish Chardonnay wines which bears comparison with the great Chards from Burgundy and California.

This varietal Spanish white wine is sourced from vines grown in clay-limestone soils at 500 metres above seal level in DO Conca de Barberà, southern Catalonia. The vineyards are located near the Milmanda Castle, a medieval fortress that was used as a base by Christian knights during the Spanish Reconquista.

Somehow reversing the usual vinification process, the wine was fermented in 80% oak barrels and 20% oak vats for 2-3 weeks. To preserve the acidity, this white wine from Conca de Barberà did not went through malolactic fermentation.

Then the white wine Milmanda 2020 was transferred into half new 300-litre French oak barrels and 1,500-litre oak vats, where it was aged for 4 months. Then the wine was aged for another 12 months on lees. It was bottled in June 2022 and stored for some months before hitting the market.

Cherished by wine aficionados all over the world, this varietal Crianza white wine is one of Spain's best white wines. This should evolve nicely in the bottle.

11,959 bottles produced.

Pair with white meat recipes, oily fish dishes, smoked foods and creamy cheeses.

Appearance

The white wine Milmanda is medium yellow with some greenish reflections.

Nose

This varietal Chardonnay from Conca de Barberà is elegant and refined. French patisserie, fennel, citrus and bone fruit, with a leesy remembrance, a mineral fleck and a surprising note of white truffles. Tirelessly fine-tuned over the years, the wine feels fresher and livelier than ever.

Palate

This white wine of Bodega Torres is nuanced, sleek and richly textured. Excellent acidity, with a note of lemon tart, a bitter tip and a long, creamy finish. Again, it is clear that the winemaking approach of Bodega Torres has changed, becoming less interventionist and oak-driven.

Our personal opinion

The change in style has certainly benefited the wine Milmanda 2020. Besides being a first-class wine, this Chardonnay now lets terroir speak.

great Chard
Value
Lighter than I remembered. I suppose oak ageing has been reduced -and rightly so, I say. It is now a more crisp and expressive wine. Utterly nice.
