The winery that put the DO El Bierzo name on the map, Bodegas Castro Ventosa is the producer of the wine Valtuille Cepas Centenarias, formerly known as Valtuille Cepas Viejas.
This single vineyard Spanish red wine is made basically from Mencía, with a touch of Alicante Bouschet (aka Garnacha Tintorera) and a droplet of Bastardo (aka Merenzao and Trousseau) and other red varieties. Grown in sandy-clay soils, most of the vines are over 50 years old.
The grapes were hand harvested, partially destemmed and meticulously vinified in French oak vats by the one and only Raúl Pérez. After macerating for a long time, this single vineyard red wine was aged for 12 months in 225 and 500-litre French oak barrels.
Bottled unfiltered, the wine Valtuille Cepas Viejas 2022 was aged for around 12 months in the cellar prior to its commercial release. This Crianza red wine was bottled in May 2024.
