Bunnahabhain
The gentlest of all Islay whiskies.
Situated on the shores of the Sound of Islay, on the west coast of Scotland, the Bunnahabhain distillery was founded in 1861. Because of the remote location of the distillery, during the first decades of its existence all supplies were transported by boat. That changed in 1930, when a hilly road to the distillery was built. In 1993, the last boat docked and, from then on, all supplies were transported by road.
In 1979, this distillery from Scotland released the 12 Year Old Single Malt. Besides being the first great critical and commercial success of the Bunnahabhain distillery, it clearly defined the style of the Bunnahabhain whisky: mild, elegant and non-peated, in contrast the traditional Islay whisky.
In 2003, the company was bought by Burn Stewart distillers, and in 2006 the first 18-year-old and 25- year-old single malt bottlings were released onto the market. From 2010, all Bunnahabhain whisky is produced non-chillfiltered, with natural colours and bottled at 46% abv. In 2017, the fusion of Burn Stewart with Distell resulted in new investments, an extension of the product portfolio and a packaging upgrade. In 2021, the distillery opened a new Visitor Centre.
