Bodegas Cerrón

Bodegas Cerrón

The reinvention of Jumilla.

The history of Bodega Cerrón runs parallel with the modern history of Spanish wine. The origins of the project go back to the late XIXth century, when the great grandfathers of Juanjo, Lucía and Carlos Cerdán, the current managers of the winery, planted the first Monastrell parcels in the village of Fuente Álamo, in the province of Albacete, DO Jumilla.

In the 1950s, after the Spanish Civil War, the Cerdán grandfathers joined the local wine coop and sold their wine in bulk. In the 1990s, the third generation planted international varieties and began the process of converting the vineyards to organic agriculture.

Run by the fourth generation of the Cerdán family, Bodega Cerrón winery is nowadays considered to be, both in Spain and abroad, one of Jumilla's most interesting producers – if not the most interesting of them all. - A project dedicated to preserving the wine heritage of the region, the Cerrón winery cultivates mostly indigenous varieties, notably old-vines Monastrell and old-vines Airén. The company is also deeply committed to the practice of biodynamic viticulture (boasting a Demeter certification).

Besides the old vines, most of which are ungrafted, it is also worth mentioning that the vineyards of Bodega Cerrón sit at 900 to 950 metres above sea level, in an area mostly composed of cool limestone soils that impart a particular tension and vibrancy to the wines. The estate vineyards, all certified organic, cover a surface area around 30 hectares.

The wines of Bodega Cerrón typically go through a partial whole-cluster vinification in different types of containers, such as concrete diposits, clay vessels, stainless steel tanks and wooden vats. Contrary to the habitual trend in Jumilla, the use of wood is circumspect, frequently involving totally or partially ageing the wines in large wooden vats not to suffocate the fruit and impede site expression.

The "terroirist" collection of Bodegas Cerrón - including gems such as the red wine Matas Altas and the red wine La Servil – is sold under the Stratum Wines label. Yearly production averages 100,000 bottles.
