Bodegas El Paraguas

Atlantic purity from the DO Ribeiro.

Founded in 2011, bodega El Paraguas is the joint project of oenologist Felicísimo Pereira, the fourth generation of Galician grapegrowing family, and Marcial Pita, a journalist from El Ferrol that switched careers to become a winemaker. The El Paraguas winery started making garage wines in the strictest sense of the term – the first vintages were actually vinified at Mr. Pereira's house parking lot – until in 2015 the company built its current technical facility in the village of Cenlle, in the Galician province of Ourense.

A winery specializing in Galician white wines, bodega El Paraguas owns around 5 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Valle de Avia, a subzone of DO Ribeiro with a mild Atlantic climate and a Continental influence. Planted between 1892 and 2009, the estate vineyards of bodega El Paraguas are divided into five parcels: La Cabrita, A Castiñeira, Paraje de la Mina, Viña del Médico and Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Socorro, mainly composed of sandy soils with a granitic subsoil. The main variety is Treixadura, a characterful Galician white variety that shares the land with Albariño and Godello. The is also a small plot of the red variety Mencía.

Made under the technical guidance of Felicísimo Pereira, whose winemaking style underscores the freshness and Atlantic elegance of the Ribeiro region, the wines from bodega El Paraguas are typically vinified in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. After that, they are aged, either totally or in part, in French oak barrels. The company's product portfolio is comprised of three wines: El Paraguas Atlántico, La Sombrilla and Fai Un Sol de Carallo, which have won numerous awards and have been given high scores by prominent wine writers. Depending on vintage conditions, yearly production of the El Paraguas winery varies from 13,000 to 24,000 bottles.
