Bodegas Olivares

Bodegas Olivares owns one of the world's largest surface areas of ungrafted vines.
Founded in 1930 by Pascual Olivares Fernández, Bodegas Olivares is located in the village of Hoya de Santa Ana, in one of the freshest areas of DO Jumilla. In 1979, the third generation of the family started exporting wine, and in 1998 the Olivares winery released the first vintage of the sweet wine Olivares Dulce Monastrell, one of Spain's most appreciated dessert wines.
Nowadays, the Olivares winery owns 110 hectares of low-yielding, ungrafted Monastrell vines with an average age of 60 years. This makes the Hoya Santa Ana estate one of the largest surface areas of ungrafted vines in the world. Farming procedures follow a minimal intervention and environmentally-friendly approach, not using any chemical products at any stage of the process.
Besides the ungrafted vines, Bodegas Olivares has an additional 165 hectares of Syrah and Grenache vineyards, situated on a high plateau at 825 metres of altitude, one of DO Jumilla's highest spots, near the village of Torraba. The altitude provides for lots of sun hours and great temperature differences between daytime and nighttime, a key factor for a slow and steady ripening of the grapes. As for the soils, they are mainly composed of limestone, an ingredient which brings sharpness, freshness and acidity to the wines.
The wines of the Olivares winery from Murcia are mostly made from Monastrell. However, the best-known product of Bodega Olivares is the wine Olivares Dulce Monastrell, one of Spain's most appreciated sweet wines.
