Bodegas Ordóñez

Founded in 2004 by Málaga-born Jorge Ordóñez, Grupo Jorge Ordóñez is the mother company of several brands that aim to capture the particular identity of some of Spain's best terroirs.

From the outset, Mr. Jorge Ordóñez defined an uncompromisingly site-specific approach for his company. Thus, instead of producing tons of technically correct and unexciting wines in a mega facility, he tirelessly travelled around Spain in search of ancient vineyards which could embody the spirit of a place.

The first company founded by Mr. Ordóñez was Jorge Ordóñez Málaga, located in his hometown. A partnership between Mr. Ordóñez and the Kracher family, the winery makes dry and sweet wines from Muscat and Grenache vineyards planted in the impossible steep slopes of the rugged Axarquía region.

In DO Calatayud, Aragón, the cradle of the renache variety, Mr. Ordóñez founded Bodegas Breca in 2010 with the aim of producing varietal wines from arguably the world’s most ancient clone of the variety Grenache from Aragón.

Mr. Jorge Ordóñez was one of the DO Toro’s modern pioneers. In 1997, he founded world-famous Bodegas Numanthia with the well-known Eguren brothers. After selling the company in 2007, Mr. Ordóñez started Bodegas Vatan, his personal project in DO Toro, which produces bold red wines from venerable Tinta de Toro vineyards.

In the DO Rueda, also under the Bodegas Vatan brand name, Mr. Ordóñez makes varietal Verdejo wines, most of which are fermented in oak and aged on lees. The oldest vineyard, Finca Las Suertes, sits at 950 metres of altitude and was planted in 1886.

Speaking of white wines, Grupo Jorge Ordóñez is also the owner of Bodegas La Caña and Bodegas Avancia in Galicia. The first is located in Val do Salnés, DO Rías Baixas, the best area for growing Albariño. The second, located in DO Valdeorras, is one of Spain’s top producers of varietal Godello wines, as well as a fine producer of Mencía wines, a red variety that in Galicia shows a compelling Atlantic profile.
