Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda

A symbol of New Wave Rioja.

The history of Bodegas Roda began in the late 1980s, when Carme Daurella and Mario Rotllant arrived in La Rioja to start an ambitious wine project that, in a short amount of time, succeeded in positioning itself as a key name of the so-called “new Rioja”. The company is currently run by Rioja-born oenologist and agronomist Agustín Santolaya.

Located at the Barrio de La Estación in Haro, the birthplace of such legendary names as La Rioja Alta or López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia, Bodegas Roda winery has its headquarters in an old storehouse from the XIXth century that was completely refurbished and equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking technology. The winery owns 50 hectares of vineyards, and sources the rest of the grapes from 70 hectares of vineyards owned by local winegrowers.

The vineyards of Roda winery are at 380 to 650 metres of altitude, in the heart of Montes Obarenses, a region where the Sierra de Cantabria and the Iberian System converge, and whose climate combines Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental influences. The winery grows the traditional red varieties from DOCa Rioja; namely, Tempranillo, Graciano and Grenache. Besides, over the last years it has shown growing interest in the local white varieties: Viura, White Grenache and Malvasía.

The winemaking process is carried out with meticulous attention to detail. After being selected on a sorting table, the hand-picked and fully destemmed grapes are fermented with selected yeasts in oak vats, which are replaced every 10 years. Each parcel is individually vinified, and the process includes a pre- fermentation cold maceration and a post-fermentation maceration. After that, this wines from Rioja go through the malolactic fermentation before being aged in oak for 12 to 16 months. Finally, they are typically cellared for 20 to 24 months before hitting the market.

The product portfolio of Bodegas Roda comprises four red wines and a long anticipated white wine, which made its debut with the 2019 vintage to great critical acclaim. Complex, profound and age-worthy, the wines of Bodegas Roda winery are shaping the evolution of modern-day Rioja.
