R. López de Heredia - Viña Tondonia

Located in Haro, the wine capital of La Rioja, bodega López de Heredia was founded in the late XIXth century. In 1913, R. López de Heredia bought the first vineyard: Viña Tondonia, a estate over 100 hectares planted with the traditional red Rioja varieties. Besides, the winery also owns the 15-hectare plot Finca El Bosque, the origin of the Viña Bosconia collection, Viña Cubillo, a 24-hectare estate which gives its name to the company's entry-level wine, and Viña Zaconia, a vineyard planted mostly with Viura and destined to the production of white wines.

Bodega R. López de Heredia is based in a huge facility over 50,000 square meters in size. The cave where the wines are aged is 10 metres below ground level. The ageing takes place in wooden containers built in the winery's own cooperage, as it used to be in the past.

Harvest at López de Heredia winery is always done by hand. Once in the cellar, all of the wines are aged in American oak barrels, in some cases for amazingly long periods of time. In fact, bodega López de Heredia-Viña Tondonia is one of the world's most patient wineries, never releasing a product until it is fully rounded and mature. This is one of the reasons why the Viña Tondonia wines have a personality unlike any other.
