Celler Comunica
Granitic freshness in the heart of Montsant.
Bodega Comunica is the joint project of Pep Aguilar and Patri Morillo, two seasoned wine professionals that, after having worked for several years as consultants for several wineries across Spain, set up shop in the DO Montsant in 2012.
The vineyards of bodega Celler Comunica are located in the Mas d’en Cosme estate, near the village of Falset, at an altitude of 370 metres, near the Llaberia mountain range. The estate covers a surface are of 7 hectares of mainly granitic soils, interspersed with some clay-limestone streaks and with abundant groundwater, which helps balance the high temperatures of the area. Though the climate is quite dry, the garbinada – a wet north-east wind – keeps the vines relatively fresh even during the hot summer days.
As regards grape varieties, half of the estate vineyards of the Celler Comunica winery are planted with the Grenache grape, that shares the land with Hairy Grenache, Grey Grenache, White Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Ull de Llebre. The vines are 30 to 100+ years of age. In the words of the company’s founders and current managers, freshness is the defining feature of the wines by Celler Comunica, a characteristic that emanates from the fresh granite soils as well as from the non-interventionist approach to winemaking, which is carried out in stainless steel tanks and uses no wood whatsoever at any stage of the process.
