Krug

Krug

The legendary Maison Krug produces arguably the world's most renowned Champagnes.

Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, it is no exaggeration to say that Maison Krug is the most prestigious winery in AOC Champagne, as well as the world's most famed sparkling wine producer. As a matter of fact, the aura which surrounds the brand is comparable only to the mystique of some legendary names from Burgundy and Bordeaux.

From its inception, Maison Krug was set up to produce world-class sparkling wines with a consistent level of quality, regardless of the contingencies of each specific vintage. That was the origin of Krug Grande Cuvée, the staple of the company and the only sparkling wine from Maison Krug which is released onto the market every year. A non-vintage Champagne, it is made blending about 120 different cuvée wines from 10 different vintages. Some of the wines are over 15 years of age. The fact that this sparkling wine remains virtually indistinguishable along the years attests to the remarkable craftmanship and painstaking attention to detail of Maison Krug's winemaking team.

Maison Krug sources the grapes from roughly 250 different vineyards, located in the best terroirs of the Champagne region. (It is worth pointing out that there are approximately 265,000 plots of vineyards within the boundaries of AOC Champagne.) Planted with the traditional varieties Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, each vineyard is individually vinified according to its particular characteristics.

The alcoholic fermentation of Krug Champagnes takes place in old, 205-litre barrels made from Argonne wood. After that, they are aged from 5 to 18 years in the bottle. The resulting Krug sparkling wines have a degree of complexity and finesse that very few competitors, if any, are able to match.
