Martín Faixó

Martín Faixó

The wine from Cadaqués.

The project of bodega Martín Faixó began in 2000, when the Martín Faixó family from Cadaqués – one of the world’s most beautiful coastal villages – which had been in the restaurant business since the mid XXth century, began recovering vineyards in the Cap de Creus area, the east tip of the Iberian Peninsula. A strip of land of rugged beauty – famously depicted in many paintings by the legendary Salvador Dalí, who never ceased to be inspired by its dreamlike geological formations – Cap de Creus is located between Cadaqués and Port de la Selva, two of the northernmost towns in DO Empordà.

The first wines of Sa Perafita-Martín Faixó were produced in 2007. Since day one, the winery was committed to the practice of organic agriculture. Nowadays, Martín Faixó winery owns 18 hectares of certified organic vineyards with black slate soils, similar to the ones common in Priorat. The soil typology, together with the scarce rainfall, abundance of sunlight hours and effect of tramuntana - a cold and relentless northern wind that prevents diseases and gently dessicates the berries - impart to the grapes an exceptional minerality and concentration.

Regarding varieties, the Martín Faixó winery grows both local grapes, like Grenache, Picapoll and Muscat of Alexandria, and international varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vinification takes place in Mas Sa Perafita, a country house dating from the XIVth century that was fully restored by the family in 2003. Besides being used as a wine production facility, the house is open for visitors, offering wine tastings, vineyard visits and wine routes across the Cap de Creus area. Definitely a must-visit for wine lovers touring the Costa Brava region.

The portfolio of Martín Faixó wines comprises sparkling and still wines. One of the most admirable traits of this winery from Cadaqués is that, contrary to current trends in the wine market, its mid and top- shelf red wines, Martín Faixó Perafita and Martín Faixó Cadac, are only released after a very prolonged cellaring – up to 10 years in the bottle! - so as to guarantee peak performance and complete customer satisfaction. Current production is around 50,000 bottles per year.
