The Ossian Vides y Vinos winery was founded in 2005 by Ismael Gonzalo, a winegrower from Rueda, and the late Javier Zaccagnini, founder of the Sei Solo winery in the DO Ribera del Duero. Their goal was to produce world-class white wines from old, pre-phyllosera Verdejo vines in the province of Segovia. Since 2016, the winery - based in the village of Nieva - has been owned by the Ruiz Aragoneses family, the proprietors of the renowned Pago de Carraovejas winery in the Ribera del Duero. The winery is part of the Alma de Carraovejas business group, which encompasses the family's various brands.
Situated at an average altitude of 900 meters in an area with an extreme climate - featuring freezing winters and sweltering summers - the vineyards of Ossian Vides y Vinos cover approximately 110 hectares within the VT Castilla y León. These vineyards are distributed across the towns of Nieva, Nava de la Asunción, Moraleja de Coca, Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, Bernuy de Coca, Villagonzalo de Coca, Aldeanueva del Codonal, Aldehuela del Codonal, Codorniz, Melque de Cercos and Ochando.
Due to its predominantly sandy soils, the area has remained virtually free of phylloxera to this day, enabling the preservation of an exceptional biological heritage that is unique in the world. Planted on their own roots (ungrafted), the majority of the Verdejo vines are over 100 years old, with some reaching up to two centuries. Bodega Ossian Vides y Viñedos employs rigorous organic farming practices and uses no synthetic products and chemical fertilizers. In 2005, the winery further deepened its commitment to its incomparable terroir by obtaining Demeter byodinamic certification.
Since 2005, the wines by the Ossian Vides y Vinos winery have been produced using traditional methods in a newly built facility equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking technology. Focusing on the Verdejo variety, the wine portfolio of Ossian winery begins with Quintaluna - a fantastic entry-level offering - steps up to legendary whites like the eponymous Ossian (made fom ungrafted vines), and culminates with Capitel, an exceptional single-plot wine with extremely limited production.
Bodega Ossian Vides y Vinos produces approximately 190,000 bottles annually.
