To define the wine Cal Batllet Escanya-vella as 'almost unique' is not an exaggeration, but a statement of fact.
Indeed, this was the first ever Spanish white wine made solely from the Escanyavella variety released to the market - currently, there are only two varietal Escanyavella wines.
An ancestral variety grown for centuries in the Priorat region, Escanyavella was rescued from oblivion over a decade ago by Marc Ripoll Sans, founder and chief winemaker of bodega Cal Batllet. Slightly rustic, the variety is nonetheless noteworthy for its high acidity, rich aromatic personality and capacity to develop complexity in the bottle over the years.
Sourced from old bushvines grown in slate soils near the village of Gratallops, DOQ Priorat, the grapes were hand-picked and then fermented in Flextank eggs under controlled temperature.
After that, the white wine Cal Batllet Escanya-Vella 2024 was aged on lees in the said vessels for 6 months.
We suggest aerating this Vi de Vila ('Village Wine') from Gratallops before drinking.
