A producer of quality wines in several Spanish wine regions, it is no wonder that Gil Family Estates has a subsidiary in world-famous DOQ Priorat, called Bodegas Llicorella Vins.

The flagship item of Juan Gil's Priorat wine project, the red wine Clar del Bosc is also his personal tribute to a one-of-a-kind wine region. (Interestingly, this Spanish red wine is crafted by the talented winemaker Silvia Puig, a good friend of ours. If you are a lover of the region, you should definitely check out the catalogue of bodega En Números Vermells, Ms. Puig’s personal wine project.)

A blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes were hand-harvested in 16 kg boxes and carefully selected. Then they were fermented in 15 and 30 hl stainless steel tanks, with one or two daily pump-overs, and in 500-litre French oak barrels, with two pump-overs per day.

After that, each of the four batches of the red wine Clar del Bosc 2021 was separately aged in 225, 300 and 600-litre French oak barrels for a period of 12 months. Finally, this red wine from Priorat was blended, bottled and aged for a further months in the cellar.

Decant this Crianza red wine at least 2 hours before drinking.

Properly stored, this Priorat wine by Juan Gil should definitely improve in the bottle for some years.

Appearance

The red wine Clar del Bosc is deep purple with some ruby reflections.

Nose

This blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is impressively complex, with succulent ripe berries underscored by notes of black pepper, cinnamon, and kirsch liqueur, entwined with suggestions of crushed slate, wet rocks and Mediterranean garrigue.

Palate

Profound and intense as one expects a Priorat wine to be, this wine of Bodegas Llicorella Vins also shows admirable balance and an elegance seldom encountered in the region. Gently spicy and stony, with a metallic and earthy note, powdery tannins and a linear acidity which keeps everything in the right place. Excellent definition, with a sweet core of berry fruit and a long finish that suggests dark chocolate, tobacco and fine leather.

Our personal opinion

The great Juan Gil has managed to capture the very essence of Priorat. The red wine Clar del Bosc 2021 is simply remarkable.
