Details

A remarkable Spanish red wine from southeastern Spain, Enrique Mendoza Estrecho Monastrell is a varietal Monastrell made by Bodega Enrique Mendoza, one of the most interesting producers in the region.

The grapes were sourced from a single vineyard, called "Estrecho de Pipa", located in the highest area of DO Alicante. Planted in extremely poor sandy soils, the low-yielding grapevines are farmed following minimal intervention techniques and environmentally friendly procedures, using no chemicals or synthetic pesticides whatsoever.

After a meticulous harvest, Enrique Mendoza Estrecho Monastrell 2019 was traditionally vinified and aged for 15 months in used French oak barrels.

Decant this Crianza red wine a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.

Pair this red wine from Alicante with roast recipes and oily fish dishes.

Appearance

The red wine Enrique Mendoza Estrecho Monastrell is medium ruby with a garnet rim.

Nose

Complex, rich and extremely pure, just as an old-vines Monastrell should be. Blueberries, mulberries and tree bark, nuanced by blue flowers, dim spicy aromas and a symphony of Mediterranean herbs, underpinned by mineral notes and remembrances of dry earth.

Palate

This red wine of bodega Enrique Mendoza sort of squares the circle intensity and finesse. It has a marvelous texture, full of detail and intrincacy, a fabulous acidity and some filigree tannins. Overall, the wine feels crisp and loose at the same time. Long finish with a deeply mineral and balsamic aftertaste.

Our personal opinion

Straight to the podium of the great Spanish wines, Enrique Mendoza Estrecho Monastrell 2019 is simply stunning.

Value
Exceptional, along the lines of some great Rhônes. However, it is deeper and somehow less flashy. Great control and authority, superb craftmanship and GREAT ageing potential.
