Details

Produced by Bodegas Cepa 21, owned by the prestigious Moro family, Horcajo is a premium, limited-production Spanish red wine from DO Ribera del Duero.

Made solely from Tempranillo, this red wine from Ribera del Duero is sourced from a single parcel of vines, called Horcajo, composed of sandy-clayey soils peppered with cobble stones. The vineyard is situated in Castrillo de Duero, an area with Mediterranean climate with a Continental influence.

The grapes were first fermented in stainless steel tanks and macerated for 26 days with the skins. Then the wine was transferred into French oak barrels, where it went through malolactic fermentation for around 30 days.

After that, the red wine Horcajo 2018 was aged for 18 months in the barres before being bottled.

This impressive Crianza red wine should be decanted at least 30 minutes before drinking.

Pair with casseroles, roasted meat and aged cheeses.

Appearance

The red wine Horcajo is deep purple with a ruby edge and some reddish reflections.

Nose

This is complex and impressive Tempranillo. Brooding black fruit-damson, blueberries, black cherries- with bitter cocoa, roasted coffee and a nice spicy undercurrent, evolving into wood smoke, cured meat and undergrowth.

Palate

This wine from Bodegas Cepa 21 has a taut structure, with sinewy tannins, a steely acidity and remarkable balance. Substantial and fruit-driven, with spicy oak, some cedar an Moroccan spices and a very long finish with a balsamic aftertaste and a gently mineral tang.

Our personal opinion

Quite special, Horcajo 2018 is a very serious effort with considerable potential for development.

For the long haul
Value
This is certainly pricey, but I think it will evolve beautifully in the bottle. Definitely a wine for long-term storage.
