Bodegas Volver

The joint project of Jorge Ordóñez and Rafael Cañizares.

Jorge Ordóñez and Rafael Cañizares, the co-founders of Bodegas Volver, created the company with the aim of making Monastrell wines in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, a region locally known as the Levante. As time went on, though, the project expanded into other areas of the country. Nowadays, Bodegas Volver owns five brands: “Quinta del 67”, “Paso a Paso”, “Volver”, “Tarima” and “Triga”, and makes wine in seven Spanish designations of origin: DO Jumilla, DO La Mancha, DO Alicante, DO Valencia, DO Almansa, DO Cava and Tierra de Castilla.

In the DO La Mancha, the Bodegas Volver winery has 100+ hectares of Tempranillo vineyards grown at 600 metres above sea level, in an area with poor sandy soils with a harsh Continental climate. The red wine Volver is an excellent example of the Tempranillo from La Mancha.

In the DO Alicante, the vineyards of Bodegas Volver are planted in shallow, rocky soils with very low levels of organic matter. The area has a Continental climate that benefits from the effect of the Mediterranean breeze. Monastrell is the flagship variety there, followed by Garnacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet). The Tarima winery makes intense and flavourful red wines from both red varieties.

The current manager and head winemaker of Bodegas Volver is oenologist Rafael Cañizares – co-owner of the company with Jorge Ordóñez. – He is helped in the task by his daughter, Sofía Cañizares.
