Comalats

Organic high-altitude wines from central Catalonia.
Founded in 1989 by Mr. Jaume Bonet, bodega Comalats is based in l'Ametlla de Segarra, a tiny village in central Catalonia within in the Vall del Corb subzone of the DO Costers del Segre, a geographically distinctive area formed by a series of peaks and valleys. In the Catalan language, the word for valley is 'coma', and a succession of valleys is called 'comalada' – hence the name of the winery. Covering 13.5 hectares at an altitude of 715 metres, the estate vineyards of Celler Comalats are situated in an uncontaminated and rather isolated rural area, at a distance of 20 kilometres from the nearest main road.
Following the dominant trend of the late XXth and early XXIth centuries, the first wines produced by Bodega Comalats were powerful, full-bodied, high ABV reds. At that time, Mr Jaume Bonet only cultivated the Cabernet Sauvignon variety, which was traditionally vinified and aged for a substantial period of time in oak barrels.
Headed by Eva Bonet and Eloi Bonet, the second generation of the Comalats winery has thoroughly redefined the company's winemaking approach. Besides planting local varieties, like Picapoll Blanc, and local and international red varieties, like Grenache and Syrah, the two siblings have deepened the winery's commitment to sustainable viticulture and organic farming. In addition, most of the wines by Bodega Comalats are currently vinified in what one might call non-conventional vessels, such as concrete diposits, clay amphorae and glass demijohns. The aim is to respond to the increasing customer demand for fresher, digestible, more approachable wines. Yearly production of Bodega Comalats winery is around 15,000 bottles.
