Dominio de Pingus

The producer of one of the world’s greatest wines.
The legendary Bodega Pingus is the personal project of Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck, born in 1962 in Copenhaguen. After getting a degree in Agricultural Engineering in Denmark and a Graduate Diploma in Oenology at the Bordeaux University, Sisseck began his career in the Aquitaine capital working with his uncle, oenologist Peter Vinding-Tiers. In 1990, he was hired as technical director by bodega Hacienda Monasterio, in DO Ribera del Duero.
The project of Bodega Dominio de Pingus came into being soon afterwards, when Mr. Sisseck found an exceptional plot of Tinta del País in Barroso, near La Horra, that would become the origin of his iconic wine, to which four more parcels were subsequently added, located in Parrondo and some neighbouring areas. Those scarcely 5 hectares of vineyards are the origin of the 7,500 bottles of the red wine Pingus made every year, eagerly sought after by discerning aficionados and luxury collectors worldwide.
It all started in 1995, when Mr. Sisseck released the debut vintage of Pingus. The American wine critic Robert Parker, then at the peak of his power and influence, gave the wine the highest rating ever awarded to a Spanish wine up to that time. As result, the young Danish winemaker became an international star literally overnight.
The second wine of the Dominio de Pingus winery – ‘Pingus’, incidentally, was Peter Sisseck’s nickname in his native country - is called Flor de Pingus. Typically a varietal Tinta del País, this Spanish red wine is sourced from 50 hectares of estate vineyards located in La Horra (Burgos). Production averages 100,000 bottles per year.
The third and last product of the Bodegas Pingus portfolio – leaving aside the red wine Amelia, scarcely one barrel that goes entirely to the American market - is the red wine PSI, which began as a collaborative project with local winegrowers. Made from Tinta del País and a small amount of Grenache, it is sourced from 200 hectares of vinyeards, 90 of which are estate owned. Yearly production is around 350,000 bottles.
