Marqués de Cáceres

Marqués de Cáceres

Leading Producer of La Rioja.

The Marqués de Cáceres winery was founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner, a Valencian winegrower born in Sagunto and the third generation the family-owned "Vinícola Forner" company, dedicated to the production, sale and export of wine. Exiled in France as a result of the Spanish Civil War, Forner worked in the Rhône and Loire valleys and acquired two Châteaus in the Haut-Médoc region of Bordeaux before returning to Spain in 1968. Settled in Cenicero, Rioja Alta, Forner launched his new project with the collaboration of his friend and mentor, Émile Peynaud, a historical figure in Bordeaux winemaking. The winery's name, Marqués de Cáceres, was given to Enrique Forner by Vicente Noguera, the holder of the title and a childhood friend of the founder.

Launched in the mid-1970s, the wines of Bodega Marqués de de Cáceres presented a new image of La Rioja: vibrant, fresh and without excessive oak, contrasting with the pale, oxidized style typical of the time. In 1983, Cristina Forner, the founder's daughter, joined the management team, and in the 1990s the winery renewed its Bordeaux connection by hiring the legendary Michel Rolland, the world's most famous oenologist, as a consultant. In 2011, the winery launched Deusa Nai, its first white wine produced in the DO Rías Baixas. In 2014, Marqués de Cáceres began producing terroir-driven white wines in the DO Rueda. In 2019, the company continued its expansion by acquiring 60 hectares of vineyards and a winery in the Ribera del Duero, a project named Finca La Capilla.

In the DOCa Rioja, the Marqués de Cáceres winery manages over 1,400 hectares of vineyards across the three sub-regions of La Rioja, planted with Tempranillo, Graciano, Grenache, Maturana, Viura and Tempranillo Blanco. The bulk of the vineyards, some 985 hectares, are located around the winery's headquarters in the village of Cenicero. Since 2021, the head winemaker in Rioja has been Fernando Costa from Galicia, who shares this role with Emilio González, the production director.

As for the DO Rueda, the vineyards of Marqués de Cáceres cover approximately 125 hectares, situated in the villages of Serrada and La Seca, planted with the Verdejo variety, the region's flagship grape, and the international varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Rueda team is led by agronomist and winemaker Manuel Iribarnegaray and winemaker Carmen Blanco, the driving force behind the project in the region.

The portfolio of Bodega Marqués de Cáceres comprises more than 20 wines, including still reds, whites and rosés and even a line of sparkling wines. In addition to classic label like Marqués de Cáceres Reserva and easy-driking whites like Marqués de Cáceres Verdejo, there are impressive high-end reds suchs as Gadium, an ambitious and complex red wine that reinterprets the winery's Bordeaux heritage from a  proudly local perspective.

Bodega Marqués de Cáceres produces nearly 10 million bottes per year, half of which are sold abroad.
