Celler Bàrbara Forés

Celler Bàrbara Forés

The spirit of Terra Alta.

Founded in the late XXth century by Carme Ferrer and her husband Manuel Sanmartín, the name of bodega Celler Bàrbara Forés is a tribute to the great grandmother of the family, a strong-willed woman born in Gandesa in 1828 whose son, Rafael Forés, a pharmacist with a passion for grape growing, built the house in which, in the late XIXth century, the family bottled their first wines. Completely refurbished in 1994, the building now houses the technical facilities and visitors' area of the Bàrbara Forés winery.

In 2014, Pili Sanmartín Ferrer, the daughter of Carme and Manuel, sixth generation of the family, joined the managing team of Bodega Bàrbara Forés, ensuring the continuity of the project and also bringing along a fresh perspective on wine, one that goes beyond the mere commercial activity of a wine producing company in order to place both wine and terroir in a broader historic, cultural and artistic context.

Located near the village of Gandesa (Tarragona), in the heart of DO Terra Alta, the vineyards of Celler Bàrbara Forés occupy a surface area of 30 hectares, spread across small plots at 350 to 600 metres of altitude. The area has a Mediterranean climate with some Continental features, with strong temperature differences between daytime and nighttime and 450 mm of rainfall per year on average. Besides those factors, the vineyards are heavily influenced by two winds: cerç, a dry and cold wind from Aragón, and garbinada, a sea wind.

The winery grows mostly local grapes, the most important being White Grenache, Terra Alta's flagship variety, which shares the land with Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Macabeo and Morenillo, an indigenous red grape which is arousing a growing interest among winemakers and wine drinkers. The vineyards are certified organic, tended following the lunar calendar and protected with vegetal cover to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

The wine portfolio of Celler Bàrbara Forés is comprised of still wines, like the white wine El Quintà, made from White Grenache, and the red wine El Templari, one of the few varietal Morenillo wines available on the market. In 2014, Pili Sanmartín launched the En Moviment collection to release her most experimental and daring wines. Yearly production is around 60,000 bottles.
