Details

The new Spanish red wine of the well-known Celler Cal Pla from DOQ Priorat is a most interesting addition to its wine catalogue.

Indeed, the wine Mas d’en Compte Obac de l’Andreva is made from an uncommon blend of 70% Hairy Grenache –aka Garnatxa Peluda, a genetic variant of Grenache with a fresher and subtler character- and 30% Carignan. The grapes are sourced from a single, north-oriented plot with slate soils planted with low- yielding vines about 35 years old. The vineyard is located near the village of Porrera, at 350-400 metres of altitude.

Hand-harvested between late September and the beginning of October, the grapes were meticulously sorted and then they were fermented and macerated for 30 days in stainless steel tanks at a temperature around 28ºC.

After that, Mas d’en Compte Obac de l’Andreva 2017 was aged in 1st and 2nd year 300-litre French oak barrels for 14 months.

Finally, this small-batch red wine from Priorat was bottled and aged for some years before being released onto the market.

Only 1,500 bottles produced. Grab one while you can!

Decant this Crianza red wine at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Mas d’en Compte Obac de l’Andreva is medium purple with a ruby rim.

Nose

Deep and nuanced, with a pulsating mineral core combined with aromas of flowers, dried herbs and sour forest berries, evolving into cocoa, iron, blood and spices. This blend of Hairy Grenache and Carignan is totally indigenous and very original at the same time.

Palate

Linear and energetic, with well-rounded tannins, a remarkable elegance and impeccable wood integration. While its mineral character simply screams Priorat, this wine of Celler Cal Pla has a refined floral character and an agility that is seldom found in most red wines from the region. Very long finish with a spicy and earthy remembrance.

Our personal opinion

The red wine Mas d’en Compte Obac de l’Andreva 2017 shows a different side of world-famous Priorat – and a very attractive one at that.
