Celler Cal Pla

Celler Cal Pla

A family winery in Priorat with ten generations of history.

The Sangenís family, owner of bodega Celler Cal Pla, is one of Priorat's oldest dinasties. Its origins go back to the mid XVIIIth century, when one Mateu Ardèvol bought a house, called Cal Pla, in the centre of Porrera, one of DOQ Priorat's historic wine villages. Through the centuries, the estate was passed to secondary branches of the original family. Currently, this family winery from Priorat is owned by Joan Sangenís and Cristina Juncosa.

Divided into 6 parcels, the vineyards of Celler Cal Pla cover a surface area of 5 hectares situated near the village of Porrera, an area between 300 and 500 metres of altitude composed of the typical llicorella (slate) soils from Priorat. The winery grows the traditional Priorat varieties, like Grenache and Carignan, the main red grapes. As for the white varieties, the winery pioneered the cultivation of lesser- known local grapes, like Picapoll Blanc and Trepat Blanc, which coexist with the more widespread White Grenache. The oldest parcel, Planots, which is also the name of the flagship Spanish red wine of the Cal Pla winery, was planted in 1910; the rest of the vines are 10 to 80 years of age.

The wines of bodega Celler Cal Pla are made at a facility built in 2017 in the Mas d’en Compte vineyard, which gives its name to two of the most appreciated wines of the company: Mas d'en Compte Negre and Mas d'en Compte Blanc. The building is equipped with concrete vats, stainless steel tanks and French and American oak barrels of different sizes. The winery follows a traditional winemaking style, consisting in harvesting the grapes when they are fully ripe, generously extracting colour and tannin during the vinification process and maturing the resulting wines – even the entry-level bottlings - in oak barrels. Just to mention a couple of products from the portfolio of Celler Cal Pla, the red wine La Carenyeta de Cal Pla is a varietal Carignan sourced from old vines, and the red and white wines Cal Pla Negre and Cal Pla Blanc are two phenomenally priced introductions to the Priorat region.
