Details

The reputation of Pétalos del Bierzo wine has not ceased to grow with each released vintage.

In fact, this Spanish red wine put the Mencía variety on the map, thanks to the work of Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios at the head of the Descendientes de J. Palacios winery.

The 2021 vintage of this Crianza red wine from El Bierzo is a blend of 94% Mencía, coming from grapevines from 50 to 110 years old planted in steep slopes with slate soils, with a 3% combination of different white varieties (Valenciana, Jerez, Malvasía) and red varieties (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda).

Carefully selected and destemmed, the grapes were fermented and macerated in open wooden vats and stainless steel tanks for 31 days, after which it went through malolactic fermentation, a process which lasted 2 months. After that, the wine was aged for 9 months in French oak barrels.

Finally, the red wine Pétalos del Bierzo 2021 was gently filtered prior to its bottling.

Aerate this red wine from El Bierzo 30 minutes before drinking.

Pair with cold cuts, or a good risotto.

Appearance

The red wine Pétalos del Bierzo is medium purple with bright violet edges.

Nose

Delicate, highly suggestive floral character, carrying notes of violets and dry roses along with hints of black fruit, some touches of liquor, smoke and roasted coffee. This Mencía also insinuates some notes of wet undergrowth over a dim mineral background.

Palate

Again, the Mencía variety shows that Pinot Noir-like quality that has seduced winelovers all over the world. Fresh and smooth, with a medium body and a velvety, lush texture. Notions of ripe black fruit, floral sensations, a note of game and venison and some fresh mineral undertones. Tannins are soft and well integrated. This wine from Descendientes de J. Palacios has a good acidity and a medium finish with some smoky and mineral remembrances.

Our personal opinion

Superbly crafted, gentle and nuanced, Pétalos del Bierzo 2021 encapsulates the very best qualities of El Bierzo.

Good mencia

If I'm correct, this was the wine that put Mencía on the wine radar. It has Burgundian style, though it is more earthy. Medium body, juicy, very fresh. Wonderful flavours and aromas. Unbeatable with meat dishes.
