Details
Purgatori 2023
The red wine Purgatori originates in a historic 200-hectare estate planted with organically farmed vineyards, called finca L'Aranyó.
Located in a desolate, remote area with a very harsh climate in DO Costers del Segre, south west Catalonia, the estate dates from 1770, when the benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat ordered the construction of a secondary building far from the main abbey. There, the unruly monks were sent to "purge" their sins working the unforgiving land
Produced by bodega Torres, this Spanish red wine is made from unique blend of Grenache and Gonfaus, a pre-phylloxera grape variety from Catalonia recovered through the Ancestral Grapes Program set in motion by the winery back in the 1980s
Hand-picked and selected meticulously, the grapes were macerated for 8-12 days before fermenting in concrete diposits and stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. The malolactic fermentation of this Crianza red wine was carried out in oak barrels.
Finally, the red wine Purgatori 2023 was aged in French oak barrels and vats for a period of 9-12 months.
Aerate this red wine from Costers del Segre 1 hour before drinking.
Pair this organic red wine with hearty meat recipes.
| Appearance | The red wine Purgatori is medium purple with some ruby reflections. |
|---|---|
| Nose | Intriguing aromatic complexity, halfway between Priorat and Piedmont. This blend of Grenache and Gonfaus suggests crème de cassis, Amarena cherries and forest fruit, with notes of dark chocolate, cedar, herbs and sandalwood, nuanced with a mushroomy and earthy note. |
| Palate | Rich and layered, this wine of bodega Torres is medium to full-bodied, with a racy, spectacular acidity and a detailed and smooth texture. Mediterranean, but not all the way down, even showing a certain restraint, with amazing freshness, sinewy tannins and a very long finish with some leathery, earthy and spicy remembrances. |
| Our personal opinion | Quite impressive, the wine Purgatori 2023 should evolve nicely in the bottle. |
