As usual, this Spanish red wine is made basically from of old-vines Tempranillo (95%), complemented with a touch of Graciano (3%) and 2% Mazuela (aka Carignan).

After a meticulous harvest and a selection both on site and in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed, crushed, macerated and then fermented in stainless steel tanks.

The this red wine from La Rioja was aged for 6 years in barrels, during which process it was racked 10 times.

Only the 199 best barrel samples were bottled in March 2012. Finally, the red wine Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva 2005 was stored for several years in the cellar before hitting the market.

57,036 bottles produced.

Nose

This blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuela carries understated aromas of black fruit, with subtle notes of sandalwood, Cuban tobacco and cedar, intoxicating spicy aromatics -curry, Ras-el-Hanout, pepper and saffron- and hints of cocoa, fine leather and tobacco leaves.

Palate

The 2005 vintage this Gran Reserva from La Rioja Alta winery displays an understated elegance, with superbly integrated tannins and a superb acidity. Subtle and self-assured, the aftertaste is reminiscent of balsam, spices and withered leaves.
