Product Description

After the outstanding 2001 edition, the Rioja Alta winery presents the new vintage of Rioja Alta Gran Reserva.

Qualified as "Excellent" by the Rioja Regulatory Board, the mild climate of the summer season helped the fruit to achieve an almost perfect ripening through a slow, steady process.

As usual, this Spanish red wine is made from a blend of old-vines Tempranillo (95%), complemented with a touch of Graciano (3%) and 2% Mazuelo (aka Carignan).

After a meticulous harvest and a selection both on site and in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks, where they were macerated and fermented.

Then the best wine musts of this Gran reserve red wine from La Rioja were selected and subsequently transferred in American oak barrels - built in the winery's own cooperage -, where they were aged for 6 years. During that process, the wine was racked 10 times.

After that, only the best barrel samples were bottled. Finally, Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva 2005 was aged for a further 4 years in the cellar.

This world-class wine is only produced in exceptional vintages. The next one will be the 2010.

You should decant this Gran Reserva La Rioja Alta for at least 4 hours before drinking. Production around 57,000 bottles.

Drink over the next 15 years.

Additional Information
Additional Information

This Gran Reserve red wine from Rioja has a clean, bright, intense cherry colour with an orangeish rim. Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva 2005 has a medium robe, translucent and evocative.

A treasure-trove of aromas, elegant and dreamy. This gran reserve red wine by La Rioja Alta smells of old, noble wood - cedar, walnut -, spices - Ras-el-Hanout, pepper, cinnamon -, fine leather, tobacco leaves and a juicy, understated fruit, particularly black fruit, perfectly ripe and nicely balanced.

Very fresh, and with an enormous potential for growth, this blend of Tempranillo, Graciano & Mazuelo from La Rioja is phenomenally complex and, at the same time, easy and accessible on the palate. Extremely detailed, vivid, with exhilarating tannins and a superb acidity. Long finish with an aftertaste of liquorice, fruit jam, spices and some mineral notions.
