Celler del Roure

Celler del Roure

The rediscovery of Valencia’s wine heritage.

A prime exponent of what might be called the Valencia wine region renaissance, bodega Celler del
Roure was founded in the late XXth century by Pablo Calatayud, an agronomist by trade with no family
connections to the wine business.

During the first period of its existence, bodega Celler del Roure followed the then dominant trend and
cultivated mostly international varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as the definitely
non-Mediterranean Tempranillo variety. Several trips to Bordeaux and to Priorat, in particular, where he
had many fruitful conversations with the prestigious winemaker Sara Pérez, arouse Mr. Calatayud's
interest in the local vareties from Valencia, notably Monastrell, and led him to explore the region's rich
viticultural heritage, a process which resulted in the unearthing of long-forgotten grapes, like, among
others, the characterful Mandó. Nowadays, a quarter of a century after its foundation, the wine portfolio
of bodega Celler del Roure is mainly comprised of wines made from rediscovered Valencian grape
varieties.

The vineyards of Celler del Roure are situated in the town of Moixent, in the Clariano subzone of the
DO Valencia, an area known as Terres dels Alforins. The winery owns 60 hectares of vineyards, most of
which are organically certified, and sources the rest of the grapes from 25 hectares of leased vines.
Besides the mentioned above, the Celler del Roure winery grows the recovered red varieties Forcallà and
Arcos, and also Verdil, Merseguera and Tortosí, three white cultivars native to the Valencia wine region.

In addition, bodega Celler del Roure has also brought back time-honoured winemaking techniques such
as fermenting and aging the grapes in glass demijohns and clay vessels. The latter process is carried out in
the 'bodega fonda' – meaning 'deep cellar' – an underground cave dating from the XVIIth century
equipped with close to 100 clay tinajas (vessels) of different sizes. Along with non-conventional
vinifications, the wine portfolio of bodega Celler del Roure comprises wines made in an exquisitely
traditional manner, as exemplified by the red wine Maduresa, a remarkably elegant expression of the
Monastrell variety.

The current yearly production of Bodega Celler del Roure is around 300,000 bottles.
