Edetària

Bodega Edetària was founded in 2003 by Joan Àngel Llaberia, the descendant of a winegrowing family from Gandesa, a village in the province of Tarragona. A certified agricultural engineer with a Master's degree in Viticulture and Oenology, Mr. Llaberia worked as an executive for several companies before he returned to his home town to start a quality-driven wine project in the heart of DO Terra Alta, Catalonia's westernmost designation of origin.

The name of Bodega Edetària is a reference to "Via Edetana", an ancient Roman that connected the city of Tortosa (called Dertos in Roman times) and Zaragoza (Cesaraugusta). The winery owns 60 hectares of vineyards in one of Catalonia's oldest wine producing areas, as attested by the Coll del Moro archaeological site. A significant portion of the vineyards are planted with old vines over 60 years of age, and the rest are 25 to 40 years old. Located in the area know as Plana de Gandesa, the vineyards are heavily influenced by two winds: Garbí, a humid sea wind, and Cerç, a cold northwestern wind that acts as a cooling agent during the excruciatingly hot summer season.

The terroir of the Edetària winery comprises five types of soils: Panal (fossilized dunes), Tapàs (silt and clay soils), Tapàs Blanc (shallow soils with carbonated elements), Còdols (old river bed with surface pebbles) and Vall (deep, fertile, limey soils). The vineyards of bodega Edetària are tended with certified organic techniques and cover crops.

The flagship variety of Bodega Edetària is White Grenache, the signature of grape of the DO Terra Alta, a region that is home to one-third of the world's plantings of the variety. The winery also grows Red Grenache (locally know as Garnatxa Fina), Hairy Grenache and Carignan. The main international variety is Syrah. The grapes are processed in a state-of-the-art winemaking facility built in 2003.

The wine portafolio of Bodega Edetària comprises, red, white and rosé wines, ranging from entry-level reds like Via Terra Selection to Vins de Finca (single vineyard wines) like Edetària Selecció El Mas. Yearly production is around 250,000 bottles.
