José Pariente

José Pariente

Following the family tradition started by her father, Victoria Pariente crafts wines driven for her love of wine and her passion for innovation.

José Pariente, father of Victoria Pariente, began producing handcrafted white wines in the 1970s with a great confidence in the terroir and the grapes of the Rueda DO. In 1998, his daughter Victoria introduced state-of-the-art winemaking technologies to produce wines that could fully reflect the qualities of the Verdejo grape, an indigenous Spanish variety that produces elegant, fresh, complex white wines.

Located at the heart of the Rueda DO, the new building was finished in 2008. The José Pariente vineyards are strategically placed right next to the winery. This allows for quick grape transportation, which in turn prevents undesired oxidation of the grapes after their harvest. This winery dominates a beautiful Spanish landscape of dry planes with rocky soils under a continental micro-climate.

The vineyards grow in smooth and gentle slopes on the plateau of the Duero River. The stony soils are rich in calcium and magnesium, though they have extremely low levels of organic matter. The nature of these soils is perfect for growing grapes, as they encourage the formation of deep and strong root systems which protect the grapevines from drastic temperature changes, as well as from sun damage during the hot summer months. Furthermore, these soils provide for excellent water drainage as well as for a good ventilation.

The micro-climate of this terroir is windy and heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are mild and long, spring is short and summer is brief, hot and full of sunlight. The midsummer heat brings heat waves that are more bearable in the southern side of the plateau. Temperature changes between daytime and nighttime are considerable, and the average annual precipitation is quite regular, with most of the rain falling in spring and autumn. The years in which this terroir experiences only sporadic rainfalls, however, yield grapes of an exceptionally high quality.

The José Pariente winery crafts many wines from Verdejo, the predominant indigenous grape of this region. To a lesser extent, the winery also uses the Viura (aka Macabeo) grape. Recently, the winery has also started to grow Sauvignon Blanc vines for their white wines and for its first dessert wine.
